Owner Patric Götz on the origins and the unique concept of the salon

How it all began:

The idea for /monkey hair berlin_ emerged during a special time: after COVID, I had the opportunity to work on an expedition ship—for a year and a half, with stops including Antarctica. The intense closeness to nature made me realize how precious and worth protecting our planet is. During that time, I came to the decision that I only want to work in a way that reflects how I want to live: consciously, sustainably, and with purpose.

In a small notebook on board, I wrote down the concept—a hair salon that consistently avoids chemicals, operates plastic-free, and offers haircuts that truly suit people. No coloring, no perms—just genuine service, high-quality consultation, and haircuts that last.

What makes /monkey hair berlin_ special:

I work exclusively with hair soap, avoid waste, reduce water consumption, and offer a conscious alternative to the traditional salon. The symbols “/” = “to separate” and “_” = “to rethink” in the name stand for a change in direction and staying grounded—a subtle reference to the desire to rethink things without rejecting the craft itself.

Why Potsdamer Straße 91?

I deliberately chose this address. Potsdamer Straße is vibrant, raw, and creative—and at the same time full of potential. The courtyard, with its ensemble of villa, atelier house, factory, and front building, offers exactly the contrast I was looking for: calm and character in the middle of the hustle.

In terms of design, I embraced this dialogue: the green courtyard wall became part of the salon, and the clean, minimal aesthetic brings the atmosphere from outside in—and vice versa. The bench in front of the salon invites people to linger and makes /monkey hair berlin_ a place that is open to encounters.

Community & collaborations:

For Gallery Weekend, I had the chance to collaborate with artist barbara caveng—she turned the salon into a gallery for three days. The response was wonderful. Collaborations with other creatives in the courtyard are already in the works—it’s a neighborhood that truly lives and inspires one another.
